The Weekly Sticky: Starter Spine
Like any new physical activity, initiating chiropractic care can have delayed soreness resulting from motion in joints previously fixated for an extended period of time. Remember last January when you started that "New Year Workout Regimen" and you were sore for three days after your first workout, even though you didn't exercise excessively? Although your body has the innate ability to recover from the inevitable microtraumas of exercise and physical activity, you may notice that you were more sore than you expected! Your body was not used to using your muscles in that way, or to that extent, and your organs were not used to detoxifying the resulting chemicals mobilized due to your workout. It is the same way with adjustments.
Due to chronic routines and inactivity, or repeated micortraumas from certain activities or things we consume every day (among other causes), your spine is frequently used in the same way, every day. Certain areas move frequently, whereas other areas barely move at all. When you adjust these areas that are not used to moving, there can be a little soreness associated with their 'release.' But, just like your gym habit, once your body learns to move in this new way, the soreness subsides and your body is more accepting of your adjustments and gym routines. Y
Maintaining your spine with regular adjustments can prevent this soreness response from happening when you get adjusted less frequently.
Yours in health,
Dr. Baar
