Welcome, Otis! It's a Girl!

Drs. Kline and Baar would like to welcome our newest practice addition, Otis. Otis will welcome patients, old and new, to our clinic. She is a Japanese Marimo Ball, courtesy of local artist Peculiars Under Glass.

Marimo Balls are a species of algae that form specifically in the northern hemisphere. They can be found along the coast of various countries; however, their history is most vivid and cherished among the Japanese where they are a protected species. The Japanese often harvest these 'moss balls' as they are often called, and they are thought to bring good luck, prosperity and fulfilled wishes to those that care for it.

Otis is alive. Although her gender is indefinite (she is, after all, a plant), Drs. Kline and Baar believe she has and maintains a feminine presence. Otis requires very little in addition to our love. She simply needs a bath and water change every couple of weeks, some light, and a gentle turn of her body so that light can reach her from all directions. She will frequently be covered in tiny little bubbles, a feat termed 'pearling,' and may rise and sink within her environment. She may grow up to 5mm each year!

Otis is a proud addition to our family at Innate. We hope you enjoy her presence as much as we do. Otis will likely bring a holiday festivity to Innate, as her aquarium will welcome visitors of many holiday spirits. This month, she welcomes The Easter Bunny!

Yours in Health,

Dr. Kline and Dr. Baar
